The Rewriting of

Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs 

(Episode 3)

        As of today, 21/12/21, the rewriting and editing of this fable Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs have seemed to come to its ultimatum.  Maybe ready to be published. 2 weeks ago I got an invitation to publish with Partridge Publishing House, Singapore. And below is their price to publish this book:

            I couldn't make it because I don't have much budget.  Then I thought of a savior who has come to aid.  A job as a music teacher in Singapore with a salary of SGD3,000. Wow! But later onward, down. I lost during the Google Meet interview.  Then another chance came.  A job as a full-time journalist at KL; with another astounding salary of RM2,500. But same as the first - luckless.  

            For this book, like my music, I will never give up.  Just a few days past, I have sent emails to publishers around the globe about my book.  I have even sent bulk emails to companies to fund my journey to publish and establish my book.  https://fundly.com/world-travelling-to-help-the-poor#  Until now, I am still hoping and wishing for funds to come.

            Furthering the discussion here are the songs and arias in this play.  Some

songs can be modern ballads like  Honey  (Prose), ‘Thy Love’ (Prose), and 

Better Life After Tomorrow(Prose).  Others may be accompanied by Strings 

Quartet, Quintet, or Orchestra.

                          JPJ Officer:        “A stupefying story to muster,

                                                   Inclusive stupendous effort.”

                      Sikh Traffic Police:                                        “‘Mong hundred pates,

            (I.ii.46-47; pg.23 [also throughout the whole play])    Inclusive stupendous effort. and ‘Mong hundred pates, are combined in one line, though spoken by two characters.  This is to means that when the first character finishes his sentence, the second character will continue without hesitation/pause. 

                    Judge: “Ill-natured is legal mere for thyself,

                                 Carry on the lady solicitor.”

                    Solania: “Thanks Your Honour. I’m seriously intend’d.

        (III.iia.16-18; pg.76 [also throughout the whole play])  After the Judge ends his sentence with solicitor, it does not continue with Solania.  Thus give to 2 lines. This is to mean a pause in between the speech of the 2 characters. The character Solania in this short pause may give a nod of understanding.

Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs (2nd Episode)

(Episode 2)


  This writing was thenceforth accomplished after 6-8 months of ruthless hardship.  But the great thing about it, the writing was gifted. The first accomplishment was in 1998. 

      As typewritten, it was recorded at 10:45AM, 27th July 1998. It is about 23 years 4 months gap, as of this very writing - 10:23PM 25th November 2021.  

       Until at this moment, I am still surprised from where actually I got this idea. But to be sure, I got it from a dream earlier. Circa December 1997. Although the dreams had just run about 4-5 hours after Isyak, or even 9 PM, it was another dream after Fatal Instinct - the lost 413 pages novel (of which was my first attempt in writing).  

       Frankly speaking, I am not a master of English.  Nor an excellent student.  I failed my GCE O'Level English or 1119 English back in 1990.  And just a BAND 4 in my MUET examination, later, during diploma studies in 2009.  But, this mastery of writing in the English language for me is gifted. Because why?  Because I learnt it through repetitive dreams.  Only that, the dream about Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs itself was in Malay.

        There might be few idioms and proverbs in the literature, Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs.  The metric verses that represent the dialogues are mostly not  repeated iambic and trochaic lines, but randomly arranged like:

Caesarea:  “Felicitating for someone’s glory~                                      [20]

   ̸  ‿   ̸ ‿ ‿  ‿        ‿        ̸         ̸    ‿

              For action-packed circumstances, sick (like Solania at the hospital), the verses are shortened, or even asymmetrical, and mostly unrhymed.  Also the prosaic songs like Honey (IF W.042), Thy Love (IF W.013), and A Better Life After Tomorrow (IF W.002).  A semicolon is used to link (in a single sentence) two independent clauses that are closely related in thought. When a semicolon is used to join two or more ideas (parts) in a sentence, those ideas are then given equal position or rank. But in Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs, the use of semicolons vary like:

             a PAUSE:
             Thee, sweet lady; if I'm to be the base o' aids,  [ACT I, Scene 1; line 27]

             a DESCRIPTION/DIRECTION:
             Medescri’d this lone car; arear  (arear = behind) [ACT I, Scene 2; line 26]
             O' these fiv' eggs; gloss the oblong shells, [ACT I, Scene 3; line 32]
             Pitilessly speechless; tho' tiddly  [ACT I, Scene 3; line 58]

             as TWO INDEPENDENT CLAUSES:
             Neglecting her just; my loath shy   [ACT I, Scene 2; line 38]

            The term -ly which when is added to an adjective thus becomes an adverb is also used.  Further, it functions as stressing the adjective (like oft-fully (often full of), for the purpose of rhyming  (like tho' tiddly (tiddle)).  There are also abstract 2 words combined like me-financial which means to me financially [ACT I, Scene 4; line 26].  Other than that is transforming nouns to adjectives/adverbs  like purlieus to purlieusly. 
               
            Many archaic words are used like pray = please, kisser = mouth, thou (you = 2nd person singular), ye (you = plural), thy/thine (your), ere = before, behold (see/see from a distant), firmament/welkin (sky), hath (has), mater (mother), quick (alive), list = want or like, apace (quick or fast), yea/aye (yes), ayely (always), mere/merely = only, oft = often, morn = morning, phantastic = fantastic, repast = meal/food, betimes = early, anon = soon, wherefore, forsooth, etc.  

             The use of apostrophes' in conjunctions, words, adjectives/adverbs are many.  Their purposes are to omit certain sentences to equalize the metric between lines/2 lines.  Such as i' = if/in, o' = of/on, 'ther = other, 'gain = again, 'yond = beyond, th' = the, 't = it, fiv' (pron. five) = five,  e'en = even, e'er = ever, aug'r = augur, lum'nary = luminary, to unstress/silence the -ed in verbs/adj/adv/nouns like advert'd = adverted, 's can also be was like accused's = accused was, when's = when was

            Other than English, there are French sentences as well in some lines.  This is simply to create some impression upon the readers or audiences. 

       The third protagonist character, Jannequin was a French man.  A French nobleman actually.  The antagonist Ravioli was also a mixed-blood character; Javanese-Malay.  Meanwhile, the second protagonist character, Solania, was Dutch-Malay mixed blood.

          People are born, bred, and nurtured with various educations and experiences.  Me too. I was nurtured not only to work hard, courteously, responsible, faithful, honest but also to use as much cleverness I can draw from my mind to live like other people.  I read and memorized the whole Fajar English-Malay dictionary when I was still in form 1 (1986).  A year before that, my mother sent me to typing school in Parit Raja, Ayer Hitam, Johore.  I had hardly excelled in typewriting (beginner and advanced), with the speed of 78 W.P.M.  And 2 months thereafter, taking a course in shorthand. 

          So English and typewriting are just like natural to me.  Meanwhile English is just like a mother tongue.  Conversation at home was also conducted in English.  My understanding of English grew with varieties of reading.  When I was in standard five primaries, I read the biography of J.F. Kennedy and Mahatma Gandhi.  I had also finished all episodes of Hardy Boys and Enid Blyton books.  Especially The Fat and Inspector Goon.  In form 1, I read Adolph Hitler, Idaho, and Sherlock Holme's series. By form 5, high school, I studied Shakespeare and Edgar Allan Poe.  My favorite book was Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet.  But until now, I still could not memorize any of the beautiful lines 😆

          But as I have said earlier, because of the repetitive dreams, I could plan and write in English. And as of today, 27th November 2021, I am retyping Part II of Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs.

Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs [1st Episode]

The Rewriting of

Eagle and th' Fiv' Eggs 


    This dreamt fable starts with Caesarea, just finishing his door-to-door business. In a brief suddenness, he is alarmed by a cry from a parked car...  

What I've experienced is a typewritten piece by myself, which had disappeared for almost 3 years.  I am so confused, worn out, directionless by this uncalled-for loss. Alas! Seemingly disappeared to nowhere.  And to my surprise, it has returned. Suddenly flicked to live. And this is for me like a bequest by The Almighty God. 

        Am I’ve been promis’d, O! Am I, Lord?

         Risking this exasp’rating suffering?

         I am not loath to die rather waiting.”

The feeling of pain cried by Solania is like reflecting me, the poet.  The creator of those lines.  This one-piece, though beseems trifling by others, or junk by the unlettered, or bullshit by the haters of English, is my one masterpiece.  Like a painting. Like a symphony or a concerto.  I own it. I love it. I adore it. Just like I did to my late mother. 

This writing was easy to start, but harder to lengthen. And even harder to accomplish.  It seems like selling my tablecloths to a thousand houses; yet with no astounding reward. It is true. I had even walked from Gombak Batu 4 to Greenwood, Kampung Pandan Luar until to Jelatek, Ampang, from Larkin Bus Station until to Kampung Melayu Majidee, and even Kampung Melayu Majidee to Stulang Laut. Selling tableclothes, bedspreads, and the most precious─the saprahs. Knocking every door. Majorly prospects would deny or unnoticed me. So did the writing. Under the corrugated roof, I wrote, I typed, I flourished above editing this play. Seering hot in the afternoon, and icy cold in the night. With no fan. Because of no electricity.  And added by disturbances. Noises, black magic, and no transportation. Who cares? Nobody.

This writing was thenceforth accomplished after 6-8 months of ruthless hardship.  

But the great thing about it, the writing was gifted.  Logically I don't think Satan has this type of intelligence. Or genius. But God yes. Especially from the wonderful dream, He had given during my stomach was hungry.  And my future was bleak. Actually, the character Caesarea was me, and Ljiljana was my late mother. But the genius verses I picked from worthy Alien and Skeleton. Also from Wilhelm, Schroeder, Adam, and many more in my daily encounter. Encounter, as described by Napoleon Hill, the Sixth Sense.  Many people don't believe this because it is crazy. But I do believe it. And forever will.

The words might be archaic, old-fashioned.  Or even irrelevant or bombastic if compared to modern-day fiction.  But it is a revived literature from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras.  With verses ranging from 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 12 syllables, there are cavatinas, sonnets, modern free verse songs combined in the piece.  Archaic words like naught (nothing), lass (girl), behold (see), very (really), etc. are lively used.  Rhyme and unrhyme lines are carefully designed using the English metric line system.  The meanings may or may not be abstract like the one below:

Caesarea:   “I shall try, as thy quota.”

         (He opens the door and vaults in)

                                                        “I’m cherishing th’ hope,

         E’en i’ th’ minute of chance, well-nigh justly than mischance.”                 

            (Part I, ACT I, Scene I, Verses 39 & 40)

Eagle and th' Fiv' (or) 5 Eggs is actually a play that is humorous. Suitable for any age.  Although the content has to be not just read but scrutinized, this literary fable has its own specialty.  Maybe something that copies Walt Disney's legends, 21st Century's box offices, but its content, however, is thoroughly different.  Maybe these differences and specialties are nothing new to readers and admirers. But enlivening the old literature in the South East Asian world, weaving it with Malay or even Asian life, in the year of the new millennium is unusually authentic.

So today, when people are busy working and doing business; showing the public that hard-working individuals are admired, full of life, and perhaps rich, I ask myself.  

"Am I not working hard last time?"  "Am I just sleeping and dreaming my whole life?" "Am I just a burden to everybody?" "Am I just lying to myself?"  

So today, when people are diligent to support their families, I am diligent to show the world my masterpiece.
